SBS Bangla’s local contributor, Munasib Hamid, spoke with Sophia Chowdhury, a second-generation Bangladeshi Australian from Melbourne, and her mother Kulsum Chowdhury, about the challenges of staying connected to the Bangla language and culture while living abroad.

Sophia Chowdhury is a Bangladeshi-Australian digital marketer, stylist, and content creator.

In 2010, while studying for her undergraduate degree in Media and Marketing, she began her personal fashion journey through a blog called Everyday Like This.

Speaking about the challenges of staying connected to the Bangla language and culture while living abroad, Sophia said that there was a rule at home — after coming back from school, she wasn’t allowed to speak English; she had to speak Bangla.
