The first mayor of the new Canterbury-Bankstown, the largest council in NSW, will not be elected by the people , mayor will be chosen by fellow councillors, instead of former Canterbury council’s method — a popular vote. The NSW Government’s proclamation of the merger in May last year said: “the mayor of a new council is to be elected by councillors in accordance with the (Local Government) Act”.
