A federal parliamentary committee is set to be established to investigate the possibility of recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the Constitution. Recognition of Indigenous Australians in the Constitution, Labor plans to compensate victims of the Stolen Generations and a summit on child removal have dominated federal parliament. The proposals come as Australia learned only three out of seven Closing The Gap targets are on track. A federal parliamentary committee is set to be established to investigate the possibility of recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the Constitution. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says the committee, which has the backing of the Opposition, will bring together the earlier work of the Referendum Council and other perspectives.
