Dutch police have arrested a Turkish man suspected of shooting dead three people and wounding five on a tram in the city of Utrecht on Monday. 37-year-old suspect Gokmen Tanis, has been taken into custody after an hours-long manhunt.


In the sleepy medieval city of Utrecht, streets were empty but fear was thick in the air.

Police quickly identified the shooter as Turkish man Gokmen Tanis. They issued a CCTV image of him from the tram, warning the public not to approach him.

Mayor Jan Van Zane broke the news to residents as the situation unfolded, sending his thoughts to the relatives of the victims and to the people who witnessed the shooting.
