Myanmar, a former British colony, became an independent country in 1948, and since then, its military forces have controlled the politics and international relations of the country for over 50 years. The country has faced a number of embargoes imposed by European Union and the United States since the early 1990s. In 2012, a democratic government took over the country’s leadership through a national election while the military forces still held the reins of a significant portion of the cabinet. Myanmar imported a huge stock of weapons from the early 1990s until the installation of democracy, despite an arms embargo by the EU being in force. Al Jazeera, a Qatar-based news agency, has published an infographic on the arms trade of Myanmar with the rest of the world. The infographic shows which countries have sold weaponry to Myanmar from 1990 to 2016.
