Can Europe separate itself from the USA?

The CDU leader and presumably next Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reaffirmed in recent days that Europe must become more independent of the USA as quickly as possible in order to strengthen its own defense capabilities in the long term. This demand certainly resonates in Europe. French President Macron was open to offering France's European partners a nuclear shield. But how real is this longing for a free hand? Chris Rackl is a former jet fighter pilot for the German Air Force. He is skeptical as to whether Europe will ever be able to separate itself from the USA.
