Football and Contemporary Dance are fused in the performance Champions by the Form Dance Project. You have to be thoroughly fit for both forms of movement, but how can you connect these two forms of movement to produce a show, that breaks the usual limits between sport and dance?
The piece was developed under the direction of Martin del Amo, originally from Germany and a solo dancer in his own right. He is known as one of the most innovative freelance choreographers in Australia, and integrated actual football players and trainers in the rehearsal process. All the dancers are women, and that is part of this artistic examination of the subject matter and adds a social-political subtext. Trudi Latour spoke with Artistic Director Martin del Amo, Associate Artist Miranda Wheen, and dancers Sophia Ndaba und Kristina Chan.
