Joining the police force might not be as hard as some of us think. German speaking Senior Constable Stefan Schmitzer from Melbournes east confirms that there are thorough psychological and physical assessments, but he also speaks of the many rewards a police career offers. The Austrian-born officer also stresses that you dont need to be an Australian citizen and that his German accent can actually be quite helpful in his day-to-day job.

Australia is a diverse country that is home to people from all over the world, so why shouldn't the police force reflect this ethnic mixture. In fact, it already does, but there is always room for more, says Senior Sergeant Dean Weir, who confirms to SBS that another wave of recruitment lies ahead at Victoria Police. He also highlights that migrants are more than welcome to apply, as their cultural and lingual skills make a valuable contribution to the daily work of the police.
