Hannelore Kaufmann grew up in a former German Colony, in Tanganyika. We heard about her first few years a little while ago. Shortly before WWII she was so sick with Malaria that she had to leave and went to Germany with her mother. First of all they lived with relatives in Thuringia and Saxony. Soon the war started, and they had to stay, while the father got put into an internment camp in Africa. Hannelore went to school and lived in special a boarding school for Germans who reside overseas, both run by the Nazi government. Soon after a letter critical of the government was found, written to Hannelore by her mother, they left for Düsseldorf. But the bombings there made them go back to Pomerania.
