In our science conversations with Catharina Vendl, we hear an interview with clinical psychologist Dr Bettina Christl, who studied in both Germany and Australia. For this 2-part series, Catharina spoke to a psychologist from Germany and a psychologist from Australia to find out what the differences are in terms of training, practice, care and general attitudes towards psychology and therapy. Today's interviewee, Dr Bettina Christl, has her practice in Sydney and she also explains how Covid has changed the situation and how we can find help in Australia.

In our Science Talks with Catharina Vendl we will soon hear a second part of this small series on the situation of psychology in comparison. Then Catharina talks to the psychotherapist Maria Attenberger, who is employed in a practice in Frankfurt. We learn what is different in Germany in terms of training, practice, the care situation and the general attitude towards psychology and therapies in general. In this way, we also want to help uncover misunderstandings and break down prejudices.

After all, mental health is an essential component of general health and, of course, of general well-being - and people with mental illnesses also have a higher risk of becoming physically ill.

Incidentally, many more people are mentally unwell than you might think. Especially now, during the pandemic. In general, mental health problems affect an average of one in five Australians each year, and it is estimated that 45 per cent of all Australians will be affected by a mental illness at some point in their lives.

As a member of a team of scientists, Catharina Vendl is also involved in the production of the podcast series Boiling Point, which can be heard, in English of course, on the internet here:
