Almost half of Australia's population has at least one parent who was born overseas. This has an impact on their language, identity, and sense of belonging. The award-winning sociologist Dr. Zozan Balci has researched exactly what these are. She grew up in Germany. Her parents come from Italy and Turkey. She currently lives and researches in Sydney. In her doctoral thesis, which she published under the title “Erased Voices and Unspoken Heritage: Language, Identity and Belonging in the Lives of Cultural In-Betweeners,” she explores these effects in more detail.
