An unlikely arrival helped Sam Bloom find her sense of purpose. Source: supplied

"We found Penguin about three months after I got home from hospital which is sort of perfect timing because I was not happy at all. It sort of took the focus off me and we put all our energy into Penguin because she was so small and vulnerable."

E mentre Penguin iniziava a rafforzarsi, così faceva Sam, secondo il marito Cameron Bloom.

"Sam's recovery was more mental than physical and around that time, Sam sort of started getting back into exercise again, so there was a real shift, when Penguin arrived on the scene, everything changed, for the better."

"It's a big responsibility because you've got to play that story in the most authentic, responsible way."

"Sam Bloom kept a diary that was really very personal and it was only ever for herself and she shared it with us. In some ways that was the real key to knowing what it was like to be in that situation, to be in a depression and have a physical disability that she had found herself with."

"This movie is showing all the layers that come with a spinal cord injury, and that sometimes these people are on top of the world and they are kicking goals and making strides in their own rehabilitation journey and some days they just can't get out of bed and I think that's important to acknowledge."

"I hope it does raise awareness about spinal cord injuries, it's not just the fact you can't walk, there's so much more to it. And I also hope that it just inspires people, I always say to people 'don't put your dreams on hold', make them happen today not tomorrow because you never know what's around the corner."

Sam Bloom was on a family holiday in Thailand when she fell six metres, after a rotted balcony railing gave way, shattering her spine.

This is the story of hope in the face of a devastating accident.

And a baby magpie called Penguin, that swept in at just the right time...

"We found Penguin about three months after I got home from hospital which is sort of perfect timing because I was not happy at all. It sort of took the focus off me and we put all our energy into penguin because she was so small and vulnerable."

And as Penguin began to grow stronger, so did Sam, according to her husband Cameron Bloom.

"Sam's recovery was more mental than physical and around that time, Sam sort of started getting back into exercise again, so there was a real shift, when Penguin arrived on the scene, everything changed, for the better."

It's this adjustment to life with a disability that is captured in the film 'Penguin Bloom'.

Starring Naomi Watts, it portrays Sam's life before and after her accident.

Actor Naomi Watts plays Sam Bloom.

"It's a big responsibility because you've got to play that story in the most authentic, responsible way."

With representation of disability at the forefront, it was Sam's involvement in the film's production which ensured her realities were accurately portrayed.

Glendyn Ivin is the film’s director.

"Sam Bloom kept a diary that was really very personal and it was only ever for herself and she shared it with us. In some ways that was the real key to knowing what it was like to be in that situation, to be in a depression and have a physical disability that she had found herself with."

For those living with a spinal injury, it's this sensitive portrayal that cuts through.

Tom Elphick acquired a spinal injury while on holiday in Portugal in 2015.

"This movie is showing all the layers that come with a spinal cord injury, and that sometimes these people are on top of the world and they are kicking goals and making strides in their own rehabilitation journey and some days they just can't get out of bed and I think that's important to acknowledge."

But for Sam, she hopes the film will help others in her situation, feel like they aren't alone.

"I hope it does raise awareness about spinal cord injuries, it's not just the fact you can't walk, there's so much more to it. And I also hope that it just inspires people, I always say to people 'don't put your dreams on hold', make them happen today not tomorrow because you never know what's around the corner."
