Il vice Primo Ministro Barnaby Joyce ha ribadito che non intende dimettersi, nonostante le polemiche legate alla sua vita personale emerse nei giorni scorsi.
Il leader del National Party, che continua a sostenere di non aver violato il codice di condotta ministeriale, è nell'occhio del ciclone dopo che, la scorsa settimana, la sua relazione amorosa con l'ex collaboratrice Vikki Campion è stata resa pubblica ed è arrivata sulle prime pagine di tutti i media australiani. In particolare, sono emerse domande riguardo ai diversi trasferimenti lavorativi degli ultmi mesi della 33enne. A partire dallo scorso aprile infatti prima è stata trasferita dall'ufficio di Joyce a quello del ministro Matt Canavan e successivamente a quello di Damien Drum, all'epoca capogruppo dei Nationals.
Il codice ministeriale australiano non solo proibisce ai parlamentari di assumere parenti stretti o i propri partner, ma questi non possono neppure lavorare in altri uffici ministeriali senza l'espressa approvazione del Primo Ministro. Joyce insiste sul fatto che il procedimento seguito è assolutamente in regola con il codice ministeriale.
"I'm very aware of the ministerial code of conduct. It is without a shadow of a doubt that Vikki Campion is my partner now. But when she worked in my office, she was not my partner. When she worked in Matt Canavan's office, she was not my partner. And Damian Drum was not a minister. I think this is vitally important in how we differentiate between the public and the private."
Il Primo Ministro Malcolm Turnbull, rispondendo alle molte domande che gli sono state rivolte durante il question time, ha dichiarato che non è stata individuata alcuna violazione dei codici.
"I think the circumstances are clear, but the Honourable Member has not been able to establish a breach of the ministerial standards, or alleged one. If he wishes to do so, he obviously has the opportunity here."
Ma nel frattempo sono emerse nuove polemiche per Barnaby Joyce dopo che News Corp e Fairfax Media hanno riferito che il vice PM si sarebbe comportato in modo inappropriato nei confronti di una donna durante una cerimonia di premiazione nel 2011. Joyce ha immediatamente risposto, sostenendo che la storia sarebbe falsa.
"This is a story that has been brought about by a person unnamed, at a venue unnamed, at a time unnamed, seven years ago and has been peddled by the bitterest of political enemies to me. It is not something that I'm unaware of. They've had it on social media for years. It's just, in the past, I don't believe it dignified a response. But today, it's in the paper, and, as such, I reserve all my legal rights as to what action I should pursue."
Intanto le pressioni da parte dei laburisti e dei Verdi sul vice Primo Ministro continuano: secondo la senatrice dei Verdi Sarah Hanson-Young Joyce dovrebbe lasciare il suo incaric.
"Barnaby Joyce, I don't care whether you're drunk at a party or not, you don't go around harassing women. I don't care what he does in his private life, but you don't spend taxpayers' funds covering up your mistakes and your mess. He is absolutely unfit to be the deputy prime minister."
Di opinione simile è il laburista Chris Bowen che ai microfoni di ABC ha detto che la posizione di Joyce sta diventando ormai insostenibile.
"There are other elements which go to public administration and judgment, and I think, on those issues, the Government's story has been unravelling and Barnaby Joyce's position is increasingly untenable."
Le reazioni dei candidati che puntano alla leadership del National Party non sono mancate, come quella del parlamentare dei Nationals Ken O'Dowd che ha ammesso ai microfoni di Radio 4CC che diversi suoi colleghi sarebbero felici di guidare il partito se Joyce si dovesse fare da parte.
"I'm not predicting that anything's going to happen today, but, if it does, there's going to be a lot of guys with their hands up, and I might just be one of those."
Il ministro delle finanze Mathias Cormann ha espresso invece solidarietà alle persone coinvolte in questa storia, tra cui la moglie e le figlie di Barnaby Joyce e la nuova compagna.
"I can only imagine how distressing the events of recent days and the reporting of recent days would be to his wife and kids, but also to his new partner, for that matter. These are deeply personal matters, and to have this dragged through the front pages of the newspapers must be very distressing for all involved."
Joyce ha ammesso che la situazione che si è creata è molto complessa e difficile da sopportare soprattutto per la sua ex moglie, le figlie e la stessa Vikki Campion.
"I would like to say to Natalie how deeply sorry I am for all the hurt this has caused. To my girls, how deeply sorry I am for all the hurt that it has caused them. To Vikki Campion, how deeply sorry I am that she has been dragged into this. I'd like to also say to my supporters and people in my electorate how deeply sorry I am that this personal issue -- deeply personal issue -- has gone into the public arena."
Barnaby Joyce dovrà fare le veci del Primo Ministro quando la prossima settimana Turnbull sarà in viaggio all'estero.
