Harmandeep Singh Sidhu of Coffs Harbour was honoured for saving the life of a fellow volunteer during a bushfire.

As Australia celebrates National Volunteer Week (19–25 May), SBS Punjabi spoke to firefighter Harmandeep Singh Sidhu, who was commended for saving a fellow volunteer’s life during the 2023 bushfires in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales.

Highlights
  • Sidhu extracted the fellow volunteer who had fallen unconscious and saved their life by performing CPR.
  • He carefully lifted his teammate into the cabin of his fire engine and drove through rough terrain to a safe zone several kilometres away.
  • He was presented with the NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner's Certificate of Commendation on 4 May, acknowledging his bravery and dedication to public service.
Coffs Harbour farmer Sidhu has been volunteering with the NSW Rural Fire Service since 2020.

He has tackled several tough conditions on the frontline, including the record-breaking Lismore floods in 2022, when waters peaked at 14.4 metres.

On 25 October 2023, his courage and professionalism were put to the ultimate test during a fierce bushfire on Glens Creek Road in Nymboida, a rural area south-west of Grafton.

While working to protect a property, a fellow volunteer suddenly became seriously unwell, began convulsing, and lost consciousness.

"I kept calm and immediately provided first aid," Sidhu told SBS Punjabi.

Realising the severity of the situation, Sidhu carefully lifted his teammate into the cabin of his fire engine and drove through rough terrain to a safe zone several kilometres away, where an ambulance was waiting.

Honoured for bravery

In recognition of this life-saving act, Sidhu was presented with the Commissioner's Certificate of Commendation (Individual).

"Firefighter Sidhu's level head, fast thinking, care and professionalism while protecting the community and his fellow firefighters exemplifies the values of RFS, going above and beyond by undertaking his role and behaving in a way that inspires others," his commendation read.

An inspiration to the community

Sarah Hoare, Superintendent with the RFS, sent a heartfelt message to SBS Punjabi, applauding Mr Sidhu’s actions.

“We not only congratulate Harmandeep Singh Sidhu for this selfless act of courage, but we also hope it encourages more community members to engage in volunteer services,” Hoare said.

Despite the recognition, Sidhu remains humble.

“I was just doing my duty,” he said, admitting that he initially hesitated to come forward for the award.

A call to serve

Sidhu encourages others to get involved in volunteer work.

“There are many organisations like the Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Services, and Volunteer Rescue Association that welcome volunteers," Sidhu said.

"Everyone can play a part,” he appealed.
Sidhu joined the RFS to deal with the fires around his farm and residence.

He now works with the state forest department and takes part in bush burning operations.

Sidhu urged the Punjabi, Sikh and other communities to consider volunteering.
