Sixteen-year-old Year 11 student Ishmeet Kaur Sandhu from Sydney has taken an early step in her boxing journey by winning the Junior Queen of the Ring title. Training six days a week, she is now preparing for the national championships, with ambitions to compete at the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.

Sixteen-year-old Ishmeet Kaur Sandhu has claimed the prestigious Junior Queen of the Ring title at a major boxing competition held in Hawkesbury, New South Wales. The event drew more than 300 athletes from across the country.

Ishmeet won her title in the under-52kg flyweight category.

“I tried netball, dancing and swimming before, but didn’t enjoy any of them. But once I tried boxing, I really liked it,” Ishmeet told SBS Punjabi.

Her journey has not been without challenges.
In the beginning, I was afraid of boxing and getting injured. But slowly, I built my confidence – and now I’m here.

Before this win, Ishmeet competed in the Golden Gloves tournament in Brisbane, where she did not achieve the result she had hoped for.

"However, that experience made me stronger and more determined."

“Now, I train four days a week in the boxing ring, and two days focusing on strength and fitness,” she said.

Now, Ishmeet is aiming for national-level titles and dreams of representing Australia at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

“Strong willpower and hard work can change your life,” she said.
