WOMADelaide 2026: "Ganna" i "Дочки Донбасу". І не тільки вони...

1-GANNA.jpg

The singer, composer, pianist and activist Ganna Gryniva is spreading the cultural heritage of Ukraine with her original brand of traditional folk, electronic, classical and experimental music. Dipping into the musical treasure trove of her homeland, her emotional jazz-tinged arrangements have become more electronic over the years but retain the themes of the Ukrainian singing tradition, such as love, mourning and the connection between everyday life and nature. In the GANNA quintet and in her solo career she passes on the old songs to new audiences with her pure yet powerful voice. Born in Ukraine, Gryniva moved to Germany when she was 13, and has been living in Berlin since 2013. She has performed at festivals all over Europe, including at Jazzahead, Reeperbahn and Jazz & The City Salzburg.

Ganna Gryniva the acclaimed Berlin-based Ukrainian jazz artist returns to Australia to perform at the internationally acclaimed WOMADelaide Festival on Friday March 6th

Ganna Gryniva (known professionally as GANNA) is a Ukrainian-born singer, composer, and producer based in Berlin. She emigrated from Ukraine to Germany with her family and has since become one of the most distinctive voices on the European jazz and world music scene. Her work centres on reinterpreting ancient Ukrainian folk music and presenting it in contemporary forms that blend jazz, experimental electronic elements, and improvised performance. Her music often reflects her dual identity—rooted in Ukrainian heritage but shaped by her life and artistic growth in Europe.

In a recent review of Ganna’s work, the legendary Ukrainian artist Nata Zhishchenko from the band ONUKA said: “In my opinion, this is the best mixture of electronics, jazz, and devices that you will see in a live performance. She has collected the songs, and the sounds of Ukraine during folkloric expeditions. Her music is like someone has gotten into my brain and created a kaleidoscope of everything I love.”

High praise from the foremost electro folk artist in Ukraine

Ganna Gryniva’s influences stem from researching Ukrainian folk traditions, where she collected melodies and stories from archives and grassroots musicians. She brings these ancient songs to life through jazz arrangements, electronic loops, live looping, and experimental soundscapes; while her work reimagines traditional material in a way that feels both timeless and avant-garde. She describes her music as improvised electro-folk with a solo orientation.

Tracks like Malanka (a reimagined ritual song with Peruvian percussion) and Mermaids (a mystical piece based on old chants) showcase her ability to blend the ancient with the contemporary world music.

Ganna embraces experimentation with traditional folklore, while at times giving it a feminist perspective. The song Viter, inspired by an ancient folk song about a kozak who goes on a long journey, leaving a girl gets a thoroughly modern twist. “I thought, why only about the kozak? And the girl's feelings? She, too, can go on a long journey at the call of her heart.”

Ganna also uses songs written by iconic poets like Lesia Ukrainka and contemporary writers that resonate deeply with Ukrainian sense of identity. She doesn’t shy away from songs that tell of Ukraine’s struggle for survival and fight against invading forces. Her albums and live performances include ‘Hey Plyve Kacha,’ ‘Oi U Luzi Chervona Kalyna’ and ‘Zemlya’ by Grigory Semenchuk, a contemporary song that reflects on Ukraine during Russia’s war of invasion. Zemlya is a song that synthesises Ganna’s deep love for Ukrainian language, her people and its landscape.

Her work has been recognized internationally, showcased at major festivals and praised for its virtuosic vocal expression and creativity. Ultimately, Ganna’s performances—are a living expression of cultural memory, redefined, reimagined and renewed for contemporary audiences.
