Melbourne-based writer and educator Faiza Idrees says her love for Urdu and Persian has helped her build meaningful connections across culturally diverse communities, particularly with Afghan students navigating identity, language and belonging in Australia.
Drawing on the deep historical and literary connections between Urdu and Persian, Idrees says her passion for both languages has helped her connect closely with Australia’s diverse migrant communities, especially Afghan students adjusting to life in a new country. Through literature, conversation and shared cultural references, she believes language can create a sense of belonging and bring communities closer together in multicultural Australia.
