Under the Fair Work Commission's new decision, gig economy delivery riders and drivers will for the first time have minimum wage protections, with the rate set at $31.30 an hour. Mandatory insurance coverage has also been introduced for all rideshare workers, ensuring timely medical treatment in case of injury or accident on the job. Transport Workers Union National Assistant Secretary Emily McMillan described the decision as historic, saying it marks an important first step towards dispute resolution processes and greater transparency in how work is allocated for tens of thousands of riders and drivers. Meanwhile, Sydney-based delivery worker Mazhar Qadir, who has been in the industry for the past three years, said the decision is welcome but that several aspects, including pay during waiting periods, remain unclear and still need improvement.
