Jannat Deen’s family history is deeply connected to Australia’s early Muslim community, with her ancestors arriving as “Indian hawkers.” As the founder of the Muslim Museum Queensland, she is dedicated to preserving the stories of Muslim migration, the historic Holland Park Mosque, and the contributions of early Muslim communities in Queensland.

Speaking to SBS Urdu, Jannat Deen explained that a large number of hawkers arriving from the subcontinent were initially unfamiliar with English; to maintain connections with their linguistic community and preserve their faith, they founded the Holland Park Mosque.

She explained that the Holland Park Mosque is considered Australia’s oldest mosque in continuous use for worship because prayers and religious services continued without interruption, even during periods of construction and expansion.
