ABS surveys are conducted under the Census and Statistics Act 1905. If you receive a written direction and do not comply, you could face a fine of up to $364 for each day you fail to comply. Providing false or misleading information can result in a fine of up to $3,640ABS Penalty Provisions Act.

Emily says that even when many people live in the same home, the ABS does not release information that could identify an individual or household. Names and addresses are separated from other information early in the Census data processing.
