As the locals prepare for the 1st year commemoration of the Christchurch incident, SBS Urdu spoke to the local community representative about what changes have taken place since the tragic incident.

Talking to SBS Urdu, President of PANZ (Pakistani Association of New Zealand) Naveed Hamid it was an event that has changed the lives of the local community forever.

"We never thought such a thing to happen especially in New Zealand which is quite far away from the rest of the world."

The president of the local association said that the community continues to remain conscious of a possibility of such an event.

“Every day we are vigilant so that such an event does not take place. It was such a shocking event, no one can ever forget.

But Naveed says the local community has been very kind, the issue is a possible action by someone from abroad.

“The concern is not from the Kiwi community. There is still fear that someone from outside could come and do such an act.

“The guy who committed this act was not from New Zealand, he was from outside.”

On the other hand, Naveed said that the way the local population of New Zealand has come out and helped the affected families is hard to imagine.

“They have shown great hospitality towards us.

“It will remain a lifelong example of how communities worked for each other in times of crisis.”
