A man has died while being restrained by police in a Northern Territory supermarket.

Top End authorities say the officers had been in the store in Alice Springs and pinned the man down after he allegedly had an altercation with supermarket security.

Major Crime Section detectives are on their way to the town to join the investigation, which is being treated as a death in custody.

N-T Police Assistant Commissioner Travis Wurst says the inquiry will establish the full circumstances of what happened.

"There's lots of work to be done by investigative team to collect the evidence from those involved, whether they be the security guards anybody else who may have witnessed the matter, or the attending police officers all that information will be collected and analysed."

A Labor backbencher is pushing for the Albanese government to impose sanctions on Israel and its top officials over its blockade of food and medicine in Gaza.

Former Cabinet Minister Ed Husic says targeted sanctions are called for against Israeli officials for breaches of humanitarian law if the full blockade of humanitarian aid is not ended.

Israel blocked aid and medical supplies entering the strip for 11 weeks and has begun letting in small amounts that international aid organisations say are a drop in the ocean of what is needed.

At least five people have been killed in an explosion in a chemical factory in China.

The blast at the plant in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong has injured around 19 other people.

A statement issued by China's emergency response authority says more than 200 emergency workers have responded to the explosion, and that locals have been advised to wear face masks until the site is cleared.

It's understood the factory develops, produces and sells chemical components for use in pesticides and pharmaceuticals.

Eleven people remain in hospital after a car was driven into a crowd celebrating Liverpool's football win in the UK.

British police say they are understood to be in a stable condition.

The driver suspected of hitting them is now facing multiple charges of attempted murder and dangerous driving.

Investigators says the 53-year-old man was allegedly drug affected when he drove through the crowd.

U.S. private equity firm Cerberus has shown interest in acquiring the lease for Darwin Port, amid a push by the Australian government for the port to be returned to domestic ownership.

Australian non-executive director for Chinese company Landbridge Terry O'Connor says a Cerberus executive met with the port's Chief Executive Peter Dummett a fortnight ago and expressed interest, but had not yet spoken with the board.

The Northern Territory government sold the port's 99-year lease to Landbridge for $506 million in 2015, and Landbridge has previously said the port is not for sale.

Beijing has now doubled down on that position, with Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ling saying Prime Minister Anthony Albanese should never have vowed to return the port to domestic ownership.

“The relevant Chinese company (Landbridge Group) obtained the lease of the Port of Darwin through market-based means, and its legitimate rights and interests should be fully protected.”

A major study into the impact of industrial emissions on ancient carvings in Western Australia has found rocks closer to the Woodside Gas site experience greater degradation.

The report has added new concern to the fate of Aboriginal rock art around the Burrup peninsula in northwest WA, known as Murujuga, which is nominated for UNESCO World Heritage listing.

The 800 page report was handed to the W-A government in June 2024, but the findings have only just been publicly released.

Greens M-P Sophie McNeill says the report should have been released earlier.

"If they had nothing to hide, why did they sit on this for six months? If they had nothing to hide, why did they sit on it and then release it late on a Friday afternoon? We are really worried that we're seeing careful massaging of the message here by state Labor, and we're terrified that they are trying to force federal Labor to push through this project. We've seen Murray Watt say he's going to make the decision in such a short period of time. We're concerned that he has not taken into account the full scientific findings that are there in those 800 pages."

Alex de Minaur has begun his French Open campaign in style, proving too strong for Serbian Laslo Djere.

A year after reaching the last eight in Paris, the ninth seed has maintained his dominance, securing a straight sets win in 2 hours and 35 min.

He'll next face either fellow Australian James Duckworth or Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik.
