Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is in South Africa for the G-20 meeting.

World leaders are gathering in Johannesburg over the weekend to discuss issues including climate-related disasters.

Mr Albanese says it's important for Australia to be there.

"The G20 is such an important gathering. It's the most important gathering for which Australia is a member. It represents 85 per cent of the global economy, 75 per cent of global trade. And in addition to participating in the forums of the G20 I'll have important bilateral meetings with our trading partners."

An investigation has begun, about police pepper spraying an 87 year-old man at a nursing home in Sydney.

New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden says police had to use the spray.

"These are very challenging circumstances. And I just want to emphasise the conduct of this male in no way reflects the individual, such is the insidious nature of dementia and the challenges it presents. Notwithstanding the age of the man, he still presented a threat to other patients. He still presented a threat to staff and police - and I'm satisfied the matter was resolved expeditiously."

A tropical cyclone heading toward the Northern Territory, will not be as strong as forecasters feared.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Angus Hines saysTropical Cyclone Fina has been downgraded to Category 1 and will make landfall early Saturday.

"It's going to swing and start to move in a south westerly path that is going to take it through the Van Diemen Gulf and near Darwin, somewhere, probably just north of the Darwin area. Through this entire time, it is most likely that this will stay as a category two tropical cyclone, but we can't rule out the fact that it could intensify and it may become a category three tropical system."

In cricket, the opening Test of the Ashes series begins, with Australia playing England in Perth today.

Ahead of the match, both Australian captain Steve Smith and England captain Ben Stokes said the teams respect eachother.

"Look he's done a great job. He's a quality performer whether with bat, ball or in the field. He's always in the game giving 110 percent so hopefully we can keep him quiet this series."

"Yeah, serious player. Has been for a very long time. Him and Joe Root in my opinion are neck and neck the best batters of this generation. If we can keep Steve Smith quiet, we'll be giving ourselves a good chance to achieve the goal that we want."
