On the eve of Australia’s highly anticipated Asian Cup on home soil, Jada Whyman’s hopes of making her national team debut with the Matildas were dashed.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper was ruled out of the squad with a knee injury just months after she suffered a similar setback while playing for her domestic club, AIK Fotboll, in Sweden.
Whyman’s call up to the 2026 Asian Cup squad marked her first major tournament inclusion for the senior national team, after several years on the peripheral.
Matildas goalkeeping crisis
The injury blow was made even more heartbreaking for the Wiradjuri and Yorta Yorta athlete given the increasing injury crisis for Australia’s women’s goalkeepers.
Prior to the tournament, second choice keeper Tegan Micah was ruled out due to a concussion in training, while an injury cloud remains over Australia stalwart Mackenzie Arnold.
Arnold failed to prove ready in time for the tournament opener against the Philippines so last-minute injury replacement, Chloe Lincoln, took to the field.
The Matildas weren't swayed by the uncertain start to the tournament.
A first half goal from Sam Kerr ensured the Matildas pulled off a 1-0 win over the Philippines, in front of an Asian Cup record crowd in Perth.
The future remains unclear for Whyman, who will head back to Sweden to recover and prepare for the upcoming domestic season.
