What’s on NITV over NAIDOC Week?

As part of NAIDOC Week, NITV will be broadcasting a range of TV programs and films that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.

Living BlackSunday 8 July, 10pm and Wednesday 11 July, 9pm

Join Living Black host Karla Grant for a two-episode NAIDOC special, including an extra episode on Sunday night with an exclusive interview with filmmaker Dean Gibson about his powerful documentary Wik Vs. Queensland

On Wednesday night, NITV reporter Nakari Thorpe travels back to her home in Victoria and recognises the women in her community who have shaped and inspired others across Victoria. This special episode will also feature special guests including, Alma Thorpe, Archie Roach and Lydia Thorpe. 

 

Over the Black DotTuesday 10 July, 8.30pm

NITV’s NRL footy show pays homage to NAIDOC's #BecauseOfHerWeCan theme, featuring the Redfern All Blacks women’s team and the story behind their new jersey which is decorated with the faces of inspirational women in their Indigenous community. This episode will also highlight Indigenous women in sport and reflect on their continuous impact on and off the sporting field.

 

The PointThursday 12 July, 8.30pm

NITV's weekly investigative current affairs program continues with a special all-female panel. Host Rachael Hocking will be joined by NITV reporter Nakari Thorpe on a celebratory episode focusing on the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. Special guests include Hon Linda Burney MP, Seed Mob Co-Director Larissa Baldwin, lawyer and public speaker Terri Janke and Mayor of the Torres Shire Council, Vonda Malone.

NITV News presenter Natalie Ahmat hits the road throughout NAIDOC Week, broadcasting live from National NAIDOC Awards' host city, Sydney from various locations including Barangaroo (Monday), Australia Hall (Tuesday), Randwick Racecourse (Wednesday), Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (Thursday) and at the NCIE Family Sports Day (Friday).

Wik Vs. QueenslandSunday 8 July, 8.30pm

The Wik Vs. Queensland decision in 1996 is one of Australia's most significant legal cases. 

This landmark documentary features exclusive footage showing the moment in history when the High Court of Australia granted land rights to the Wik peoples (and Thayorre peoples) of Cape York Peninsula. The film examines the historical decision and how it shaped the nation and features prominent people involved in the case, from academic Marcia Langton, to lawyer Noel Pearson and veteran journalist, Kerry O'Brian.

Baarba Wadbirra: Journey togetherMonday 9 July, 7.30pm

Seven Aboriginal artists from around Western Australia are documented, as they're chosen for the Barrba Wadbirra: Journey Together initiative. The story highlights how the initiative transformed the Western Australian Police Force uniforms and police cars into vibrant Aboriginal artwork.

In 2012, Wiradjuri woman Ella Havelka became the first Indigenous dancer to be invited into The Australian Ballet in its 50 year history. Theis critically acclaimed documentary follows Ella’s inspirational journey from growing up in regional Dubbo and onto the world stage.

Black Chicks TalkingMonday 9 July,10pm

Directed by Leah Purcell and Brendan Fletcher, documentary Black Chicks Talking includes interviews of five women. The women, including former Miss Australia Kathryn Hay and actress Deborah Mailman, speak about their memories, past experiences and future aspirations. Including their different career paths varying from a United Nations delegate to an athlete, and even a community police warden.

RadianceThursday 12 July, 8.30pm

Award-winning film Radiance captures the story of three very different sisters; a diva Opera singer, a nurse, and a young spirited party-girl all unite together at their mother's funeral after spending many years apart. Starring, Deborah Mailman, Rachael Maza and Trisha Morton-Thomas, this is a film classic about contemporary sisterhood.   

 

The Song KeepersSunday 15 July, 8.30pm

Nina Sen's groundbreaking documentary tells the story of the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir who travelled to Germany to perform German hymns that were given to their great-grandparents by German missionaries four generations ago. Performing the hymns in their own Western Arrernte and Pitjantjatjara languages, this powerful documentary shares the choir’s journey and reinforces the power of music and culture.
