Ten years on from the Apology to the Stolen Generations, the numbers of Indigenous children in out-of-home-care continues to rise.

As Elders struggle with the legacy of removal and a new generation faces an uncertain future, The Point will deliver context, comment and Indigenous perspectives in its first episode of 2018.

NITV’s flagship news and current affairs program returns with a fresh one-hour, weekly format to tackle the stories and issues that matter to First Australians.

The first show will look beyond last week’s media outrage around child removal to interrogate this complex issue from a broader perspective.

Co-hosts of The Point, John Paul "JP" Janke and Rachael Hocking, will be joined by guest host, Muriel Bamblett, CEO of the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency to look at the current crisis, and will meet a young Aboriginal mum who has turned her life around to regain custody of her children.

Last year, an NITV News investigation exposed the historic practice of recording child removals through the Victorian criminal system that left thousands of survivors with an undeserved criminal record.

Following this report the Victorian Parliament has moved to wipe the convictions.  NITV’s Melbourne correspondent, Madeline Hayman-Reber reveals that this practice reaches beyond Victoria, and speaks with members of the community whose lives were changed forever.

Canberra correspondent, Nakari Thorpe will look at the work of the Healing Foundation and the human and economic benefits of addressing the trauma of child removals.
