Australia's peak Muslim leader says comments by a New South Wales Supreme Court Justice about the Quran are inappropriate. Justice Ray Fagan said Muslims should publicly denounce what he called “belligerent” verses of the Islamic book.

In sentencing a young couple convicted of a New Year's Ever terror plot Justice Desmond Fagan focused on deterring further crime.

The Supreme Court judge took aim at what he called  “belligerent”  and  "hostile" verses of the Quran.

Justice Fagan went on to say Islamic followers should denounce some sections of the holy book.

Muslim community representatives have rejected the judge’s comments and say it is inappropriate for a court to delve into religious interpretation.
