During the holiday season, celebrations and feasts are everywhere and so is the risk of food poisoning.

Key Points
  • The Australian Food Safety Information Council aims to reduce the more than 4.5 million cases of food poisoning recorded each year. The data is based on a 2022 study by Food Standards Australia New Zealand and the Australian National University.
  • According to the study, food poisoning costs the country approximately $3 billion each year, and cases rise even further during the Christmas–New Year period.
  • To prevent food poisoning, it’s important to maintain proper food temperatures and buy only what you need to avoid spoilage. If there are leftovers, they should be stored in the freezer.
