Goodbye Australia: Father forced to return to India leaving family behind

Adelaide-based Harpreet Grewal has failed in his bid to secure a reprieve against deportation, after making an emotional last-minute plea to Immigration Minister Peter Dutton. His wife Rupinder and 4 year old son Angadvir are Australian citizens.

Speaking to SBS Punjabi Mr Grewal said, "I'm not asking for permanent residency - I'm just asking for time to stay back in Australia so I can prove to the Immigration Department that I am in a genuine relationship. If I leave the country, how will I prove my case from India?"

"Moreover, no one in the Immigration department has even mentioned my four year old son Angadvir in all of this. How can this be good for him?"

"I appeal to the Minister to please read my case and let me stay in Adelaide with my wife and family", he said, shortly before his scheduled deportation.

Mr Grewal's Bridging Visa E expired at midnight, and he exhausted all other options of reviews and appeals with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

The Immigration Department didn't deem their marriage as a genuine relationship, which is why he hasn't been granted permanent residency.
