SBS´ Logie-award winning series First Contact once again got the nation debating and discussing issues relevant to all Australians with its second season, reaching 1,910,000 people across SBS and NITV. It highlights some important national issues with the aim of encouraging a deeper understanding among all Australians.
Over three episodes, journalist Ray Martin took a group of six well-known Australians with diverse, deeply entrenched preconceptions and opinions about our nation’s Indigenous people on the journey.
Yet, many Australians know little about the history of our First Peoples.
The 2014 Australian Reconciliation Barometer shows only 30 per cent of Australians consider themselves knowledgeable of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories.
Indigenous Australians are people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent, together they form three per cent of the national population, based on the 2011 Census.
