President Donald Trump says the United States Navy will begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz "immediately", after peace talks in Pakistan between the US and Iran ended without an agreement.
Iran has been restricting traffic through the strait, while allowing vessels deemed to be working for friendly countries, such as China, to pass.
In a phone interview with Fox News, Mr Trump says the blockade will be similar to what the US did with Venezuela, but on a larger scale.
"It's called all in and all out, there'll be a time when we'll have them all come in and all come out, but it won't be a percentage, it won't t be a friend of yours, like a country that's your ally or a country that's your friend. It’s all or nothing, and that won't be in too long a distance. No, we're just bringing the ships up, we got a lot of ships, so we're bringing them up. We think that numerous countries are going to be helping us with this also, but we're putting on a complete blockade. We're not gonna let Iran make money on selling oil to people that they like and not people that they don't like or whatever it is, it's going to be all or none. And that's the way it is. And it'll be, you saw what we did with Venezuela. It'll be something very similar to that, but at a higher level."

In response to Mr Trump's announcement, Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned they have traffic in the Strait of Hormuz under their full control and it would trap those who tried to challenge it "in a deadly vortex".
Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who led the Iranian delegation in Pakistan, says Mr Trump's threats have no impact on Iran.
He says with decades of mistrust between Tehran and Washington, it is the responsibility of the US to rebuild confidence.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has conceded defeat in the country’s parliamentary election, after partial official results showed Peter Magyar’s Tisza party winning a landslide victory.
Two surveys showed Tisza was on course to deliver a landmark defeat to veteran Prime Minister Viktor Orban, an ally of Russia who also had the strong support of US President Donald Trump.
Mr Magyar says the election has been "historic" for its record-breaking turnout.
Hungarian* translated into English: "But the most important thing is that the vast majority of Hungarian people felt how important the election was, how crucial the election was in Hungary today.”

In athletics, Gout Gout has obliterated his own national 200m record with a stunning sub-20 run that would easily have outpaced Usain Bolt at the same age.
The 18-year-old ran 19.67 at the national athletics championships at Sydney Olympic Park to become the first Australian to legally break the 20-second mark over 200m.
Gout blitzed Jamaican legend Bolt's under-20 time of 19.93 set in 2004 to claim the world record in the age group.
He has told Channel Seven, he is stoked with the result, but his focus is on running his own race.
"Honestly, it is good when people compare you to the best in the world. And then at the end of the day, I know I am me, I'm doing my own thing. I mean, there is no pressure for me because as soon as I go down the track there is just me, the track, my spikes, and I go by myself."
