Claims of police brutality rejected after clashes at anti-Herzog protest

Published
The NSW Premier has rejected claims of police brutality after violent scuffles erupted during last night's protest in Sydney against the visit of Israel's president. 27 people were arrested and nine people have been charged with offences, so far, ranging from assaulting police to failing to comply with a lawful direction. State MPs who attended the protest are among those critical of the police response calling it violent and heavy-handed. In other developments; Australia's Muslim community has condemned the manhandling of a group of men at prayer, accusing police of a breach of religious sanctity. The Prime Minister has described also the events as devastating but again defended the invitation to President Herzog. And a former prime minister says the police should be commended, calling for them to be armed with tear gas and rubber bullets. Warning: this story contains content some viewers may find distressing.
