I Hugged a Tree

There I was, all alone,

Standing before the most important person in my life,

The man who held me when I first opened my eyes,

The man who embraced me with his heart and smile,

The man who held my hands when I first started to walk,

The man who held me back when I was about to fall,

The man who paved the way when I was about to run,

The man who taught me how to read and comprehend,

The man who showed me how to catch a pen and write,

The man who shared with me stories and histories,

The man who let my mind travel through the universe,

The man who let my imagination float in the wonderlands,

The man who walked by my side throughout the journey of my childhood,

The man whom I look up to, proudly and respectfully,

With love all the time, and with fear, at times,

The man who cuddled me every night in bed,

The man whose kiss was the last thing that touched my head at night,

The man whose wisdom guides me till this day through the journeys of life,

The man whose laughter echoes in my heart till this day,

The man whose voice sings to my heart,

The man whose words dance through my mind,

The man whose tears and pain remained as scars in my heart,

The man whose anger walks as a reflection of my thoughts,

The man whose advice is a compass of my life,

The man whose hard work was the footprints of his legacy,

The man whose infinite books enlightened his and our vision,

The man whose love for his family was his dignity in life,

The man whose love for his mother is precious and priceless,

The man whose love for his wife and children is the ultimate,

The man whose friendship was built on trust and respect,

The man whose vision of faith is the Oneness of God and the Ten Commandments,

The man who celebrates beauty in diversity,

The man who stands for his authenticity,

The man whose kindness spread through his loving heart and softness,

The man whose dignity and pride are his gown and crown,

The man whose morals are truth and justice,

The man whose hands were giving more than receiving,

The man whose beliefs and values shaped me into the woman I am today,

The man who protected me through this day,

The first man who empowered me as a girl and a woman,

The man whom I ran to when I felt scared or lost,

The man whose shoulders were my comfort and safety,

The man who championed and celebrated my accomplishments,

The man who embraced my flaws and falls,

The man who crafted my views and moral values,

The man who envisioned my growth and success,

The man who tailored the paths of my upbringing,

The man who multifaceted and coloured my worldviews,

The man whose presence is my pride and crown,

The man whose name I carry till today proudly,

The man who loved and loves me unconditionally…

Looking at his picture,

I can see his gentle smile,

Staring in the depths of his eyes,

I can feel his soul reaching out to me,

Telling me that he is there,

Reassuring me that things will be okay,

Reminding me that I need to carry on,

And that he is there, watching,

From another dimension of life,

That he is proud,

That he is in peace when I am happy,

And that love is stronger than death.

Though I could not hug him physically,

And feel his warmth and love,

And tell him how much I love and miss him,

I still felt his immense love,

His unconditional love, as he called it,

Simply unconditional!

And then I remember, while holding my tears,

His famous motto,

Which he always repeated to us since we were kids,

“No Retreat, No Surrender”,

And I repeated,

No Retreat, No Surrender!

It is then that I cried and smiled at the same time,

Feeling weak and strong at the same time,

Feeling sad yet with hope in the meantime,

Holding his memories that I treasure for life,

Remembering the moments spent that are the jewels of our love,

And realising that I had to continue the journey of life,

As hard as it could be,

It was my turn to carry the torch,

I then looked at the nearby tree,

Strong and tall as my Father,

Green, bright, and flourishing as He,

I went closer to it,

I opened my arms,

I closed my eyes,

And I hugged it with so much love,
