10-fold increase in smuggling swim bladders of endangered fish in China


The customs in Shanghai has cracked three cases of smuggling swim bladders of the endangered totoaba fish in the first four months this year, arresting four suspects and seizing 653 swim bladders. The totoaba swim bladders, worth more than $US9.67 million, have been confiscated. The totoaba fish in the Gulf of California in Mexico was listed as an endangered species in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora in 1976.
